A dirty bong hits harsh, tastes stale, and honestly… looks bad. The good news? Cleaning it takes about 10 minutes and costs almost nothing.
Here’s exactly how to do it.
What You’ll Need
- 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol — higher % works better
- Coarse salt (kosher or sea salt) — acts as a scrub
- Two zip-lock bags — for the bowl and downstem
- Rubber stoppers or your hands — to plug openings
- Warm water — for rinsing
- Optional: pipe cleaners or a bottle brush for tough spots
Step 1: Empty the Bong Water
Dump out any old water. If it smells bad, that’s exactly why you shouldn’t let it sit.
Give the chamber a quick rinse with warm water to remove loose debris.
Step 2: Disassemble Your Piece
Remove the bowl and downstem. These collect the most buildup and need to be cleaned separately.
Place each piece into its own zip-lock bag so they can soak while you clean the bong.
Step 3: Add Isopropyl Alcohol and Salt
For the bong:
- Pour in enough alcohol to coat the inside (about ¼ cup)
- Add 2–3 tablespoons of coarse salt
The salt stays gritty and helps scrub the glass as you shake.
For the bowl and downstem:
- Fill each bag with enough alcohol to fully cover the piece
- Add a pinch of salt
- Let soak for at least 5 minutes
Pro tip: If it’s really dirty, let everything sit for 30 minutes first. Most of the buildup will break down before you even shake it.
Step 4: Cover and Shake
Plug the openings (mouthpiece + downstem joint) and shake firmly for 1–2 minutes.
You’ll see the liquid turn brown — that’s all the buildup coming off.
Shake the zip bags as well to clean the smaller parts.
For stubborn spots, use a pipe cleaner or small brush.
Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly
Pour everything out and rinse with warm water until:
- The water runs clear
- There’s no alcohol smell left
Do the same for the bowl and downstem.
Let everything air dry before using.
How Often Should You Clean Your Bong?
- Daily users: every 1–3 days (quick rinse + weekly deep clean)
- Casual users: about once a week
The more often you clean it, the easier it gets.
What About Buildup on the Outside?
Use a paper towel or cotton ball with a little isopropyl alcohol.
Avoid abrasive scrubbers — they can scratch the glass.
