How to Clean a Glass Bong (Step-by-Step Guide)

Glass bong on marble surface ready for cleaning

A clean glass bong doesn't just look better — it performs better, tastes better, and is healthier to use. Resin and stale water are a breeding ground for bacteria, and they mute the natural flavor of whatever you're smoking. The good news? Cleaning your glass bong takes about 10 minutes once you know what you're doing.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather your supplies:

  • Isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher) — the higher the percentage, the better it cuts resin
  • Coarse salt — acts as a gentle abrasive inside the glass
  • Resealable zip-lock bags — for soaking the bowl and downstem
  • Rubber stoppers or bong plugs — to seal the openings while you shake
  • Pipe cleaners or cotton swabs — for tight spots and joints
  • Warm water — to rinse

Step-by-Step: How to Clean a Glass Bong

Step 1 — Empty and Disassemble

Pour out the old bong water and remove the bowl, downstem, and any other removable pieces. Never skip this step — cleaning with stale water still in the chamber just moves the problem around.

Step 2 — Rinse With Warm Water

Run warm water through the bong and all removed pieces. This loosens surface resin before the deep clean. Don't use boiling water on cold glass — thermal shock can crack even quality borosilicate glass bongs.

Step 3 — Soak the Bowl and Downstem

Place the bowl and downstem into separate zip-lock bags. Pour enough isopropyl alcohol to fully submerge them, then add a tablespoon of coarse salt to each bag. Seal and shake lightly, then let them soak for 30 minutes — or overnight for heavily caked pieces.

Step 4 — Salt and Alcohol in the Chamber

Pour about ¼ cup of isopropyl alcohol into the main chamber, followed by 2–3 tablespoons of coarse salt. Plug all openings — the mouthpiece and the downstem hole — and shake vigorously for 2–3 minutes. The salt scrubs while the alcohol dissolves the resin.

Step 5 — Rinse Thoroughly

Dump the dirty alcohol mixture and rinse the chamber several times with warm water until it runs clear and there's no alcohol smell. Rinse the bowl and downstem from their bags as well.

Step 6 — Detail the Joints and Percs

For percolators, recyclers, or any tight angles, use a pipe cleaner dipped in isopropyl alcohol to scrub spots you couldn't reach with shaking. A cotton swab works well for the bowl joint area.

Step 7 — Let It Dry

Let all pieces air dry completely before reassembling. Standing the bong upside-down on a clean towel helps drain remaining water from the downstem hole.

How Often Should You Clean Your Glass Bong?

At minimum, change the water every session. Fresh water makes a dramatic difference in taste and airflow. For a full isopropyl-and-salt deep clean, once a week works well for daily users — or after every few sessions to stay ahead of buildup.

If you can see resin buildup or the water turns dark within an hour of use, it's past time for a clean.

Tips to Keep Your Bong Cleaner, Longer

  • Use an ash catcher — it catches debris before it reaches the chamber. Browse our ash catchers collection — they fit 14mm and 18mm joints and pay for themselves in cleaning time saved.
  • Change water after every use — 30 seconds of effort prevents hours of scrubbing later
  • Avoid dish soap in percolators — soap residue in tight perc chambers is hard to fully rinse and affects flavor
  • Store dry — don't leave water sitting in the chamber between sessions

Which Bongs Are Easiest to Clean?

Straight tube and beaker bongs are the easiest to clean thanks to their open chamber design. Percolator bongs take a bit more effort but deliver significantly smoother hits. If low-maintenance cleaning is your priority, start with a quality beaker bong or straight tube bong.

Whatever your setup, the 10 minutes it takes to clean your glass bong is always worth it. Fresh hits taste better, pull easier, and are gentler on your lungs. Shop our full glass bong collection at The Encore Collection.
