Just got your first bong? Setting it up takes about two minutes, and getting it right makes every hit smoother. From a quick first rinse to the perfect water level, here's exactly how to set up a new bong step by step, so your first session is a good one.

Step 1: Give it a quick rinse
A brand-new bong can carry a faint "new glass" smell or dust from manufacturing. Before your first use, rinse it with warm water (a little isopropyl alcohol helps), then rinse thoroughly again with warm water. It takes a minute and starts you off clean, the same habit that keeps it fresh long-term; see how to clean a bong the right way.
Step 2: Insert the downstem and bowl
Most bongs come with a downstem (the tube that carries smoke into the water) and a bowl (where you pack your flower). Slide the downstem into the joint, then set the bowl into the top of the downstem. Not sure what's what? Our what comes with a bong guide breaks down every part. Some beakers have a fixed downstem, in which case there's nothing to insert.
Step 3: Fill it with water
This is the step that matters most. Pour water in through the mouthpiece or the downstem joint and watch the level rise in the base:
- Submerge the bottom of the downstem by about 1–2 inches, all the slits should be underwater.
- If your bong has a percolator, add water through the mouthpiece until the perc's slits are just covered, tilt slightly if needed.
- Less is more. Too much water causes splashback and gurgle. Dial it in with how much water should you put in a bong.
Step 4: Test the water level
Before packing anything, take a dry pull (no flower, no flame) through the mouthpiece. You should hear a gentle bubbling. If it's hard to draw or the water jumps up toward your mouth, there's too much, pour a little out. Too little bubbling? Add a splash. This 10-second check saves you from a mouthful of water later, and helps prevent splashback.
Step 5: Pack the bowl and go
Grind your flower, then pack the bowl modestly, beginners should fill about a quarter of it, not cram it full. A light pack draws easier and conserves flower. For the technique, see how to pack a bowl, and for your first hit, how to use a bong.
Setup tips
- Fresh water every session. Always start with clean water, it tastes better and stays cleaner.
- Add ice if your bong has pinches, for a cooler, smoother hit.
- Don't overfill. Just cover the downstem slits; you can always add more.
Frequently asked questions
How do you set up a new bong?
Rinse it with warm water first, insert the downstem and bowl, then fill with water until the downstem's slits are submerged about 1–2 inches (and any perc slits are just covered). Take a dry pull to check the level, then pack the bowl and you're ready.
How much water do you put in a new bong?
Enough to submerge the bottom of the downstem by about 1–2 inches, with all its slits underwater. If your bong has a percolator, add water until the perc's slits are just covered. Avoid overfilling, too much causes splashback.
Should you clean a new bong before using it?
Yes. A quick rinse with warm water (and a little isopropyl alcohol) removes any manufacturing dust or "new glass" smell. Rinse thoroughly with warm water afterward before your first session.
How do you know if you have the right water level?
Take a dry pull with no flower or flame. You should hear gentle bubbling. If it's hard to draw or water rises toward your mouth, there's too much; if there's little bubbling, add a bit more.
How much flower should a beginner pack?
About a quarter of the bowl. A modest pack is easier to draw, conserves flower, and keeps your first hits manageable. You can always pack more once you're comfortable.
